Meralco (MER) just formed a joint venture for mini-hydro power projects. This reminds us of what MVP said in an MPI Analysts Briefing before of forming a network of mini hydro dams all over Luzon to prevent a future water crisis. He brought this to the attention of the Aquino administration that time because there is a huge capex involved also.
Anyway, the joint venture is with Blue Energy Holdings and Management Corp., and MER is to hold a 50% stake minus one share of it. This development will hasten MER’s diversification from a power distributor to a power generation firms. It has coal-fired power plants coming on line from 2019-2020. The mini-hydros with 100 MW of potential capacity are faster to establish with lower capex.
